INTERNS: Interns are welcome at Bio-Way all year round. Comfortable accommodations are available including hot water and a private bathroom with shower. Interns have full access to all 120 acres at Bio-Way.

This includes nearly 100 acres of mature forest as well as a 4 acre lake for swimming and fishing. Interning at Bio-Way is an excellent learning opportunity and the farm’s close proximity to downtown Greenville, about 30 miles, allows for plenty of options for socializing.

PERMACULTURE: Permaculture has played a prominent role in the evolution of Bio-Way Farm. Defined as an ecological design system for the creation of regenerative human habitats, permaculture seeks to emulate diversity, stability, and the resilience of natural ecology.

Practices at Bio-Way include a developing forest garden, a strong reliance on perennial vegetables such as asparagus, and the propagation of useful plants in the farms micronursery. Farm manager, Chris Sermons, earned his Permaculture Design Certificate in 2010 and continues to find new ways to incorporate permaculture into both the short and long term goals of the farm.

MICRONURSERY: Featuring native plants and edible landscaping plants, our micronursery plays an ever expanding role at Bio-Way. We strongly believe that incorporating edible perennials into urban, suburban, and rural landscaping is an important key to feeding the population and still maintaining a quality of life. The benefits of perennials are many, including the fact that they typically require less energy to maintain than annuals. Some of the edible perennials currently being propagated at Bio-Way are Good King Henry, Egyptian Walking Onions, Sorrel, and Ground Nuts.

We also encourage native plant landscaping. We believe that knowledge of the plants native to one’s area creates an important sense of place. Planting natives is also an easy way to preserve local biodiversity and an excellent way to support native wildlife. In our micronursery we choose to focus on propagating nitrogen fixing and insectary plants.

PRACTICES: Certified Organic since 2006, our goal continues to be practicing holistic stewardship of the land while minimizing environmental impact. Sustainable farming methods practiced at Bio-Way include solar irrigation, cover cropping, crop rotation, minimal tilling, composting, and providing natural habitats for beneficial insects.
